How to use the Wordle solver
- Type your first guess in the box, for example CRANE.
- Tap each letter until its color matches the game: gray, then yellow, then green. Each color also has a symbol, so you can tell them apart without color.
- Read the list of possible words. The count drops with every guess you add.
- Pick a next guess. The suggestions test the letters that most of the remaining words share, so each guess rules out as many words as possible.
- Press Add next guess and repeat.
How the colors are read
Green means the letter is in that exact spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else. Gray means the letter is not in the word, with one exception that trips up a lot of solvers: repeated letters.
If you guess a word with two E's and one E turns yellow while the other turns gray, the answer has exactly one E. It is not at either of the spots you tried. The solver follows this rule, so a gray letter only removes words when the same letter has no green or yellow elsewhere in that guess.
Strategy that works
- Open with common letters. E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N appear in many five-letter words. A first guess that uses five different common letters tells you the most.
- Don't reuse gray letters early. In normal mode you may guess any word. A guess made entirely of new letters often narrows the list faster than one that fits every clue.
- Watch for double letters. When you are stuck with few vowels, try a word with a repeated letter, such as SHEEP or LLAMA.
- Prefer common words near the end. Wordle answers are everyday words. Our list puts the 1,668 most common five-letter words in bold and at the top.
Where the words come from
The solver searches the 8,585 five-letter words in ENABLE, an open word list. That is more than the game accepts as answers, which is why we sort by how common a word is in spoken English. We do not use or copy the game's own word list and we never show the answer of the day. You can also browse all five-letter words or search by position with the 5 letter word finder.
